Hurricane Irma Update: Cape Coral's Chiquita Lock Inoperable due to Damage

By Michael Braun

The Chiquita Lock is inoperable until further notice due to structural damage caused by Hurricane Irma. The gates at the Cape Coral lock are open but traveling through the lock can be difficult and dangerous depending upon water levels and tides, Maureen Buice, public information specialist with the Cape Coral city managerís office said.

The structural damage prevents the opening and closing of the lock for normal operations. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection has been notified of the damage and advised that leaving the gates open is the best option until repairs can be made.

It is estimated that the lock will remain inoperable for the next 5-7 days, at a minimum.†
