Fort Myers Looks to Move Downtown Boat Ramp before Hotel Groundbreaking
By Levi Ismail
Opposite the site of the new Luminary Hotel is one of the only public boat ramps serving downtown. Fort Myers council members planned a workshop for June to find an alternate spot for the boat ramp before groundbreaking on the new multi-million dollar 237-room hotel. That meeting never took place.
The development team with Mainsail, the company behind the Luminary, says construction plans show no signs of slowing despite the uncertainty behind the boat ramp. Now, weeks away from construction shutting down the entire area north of Centennial Park, boaters, like Scott Rush of San Carlos Marine, are calling for the city to prioritize the boat ramp. "If you took boating out of the scenario of Fort Myers, it would change the whole flavor of our area. It's needed."
City council is planning another workshop for mid-July, the same time Mainsail developers say they expect to break ground. Opening 2019, the Luminary Hotel is part of the Autograph Collection of Marriott International, Inc. and is the first of its kind in the Fort Myers-Naples area.
