Presented
by
Featured speaker: Carl Hiaasen
Carl Hiaasen grew up on the edge of Florida's Everglades
where he spent his childhood romping through the mangrove swamps and fresh
water lagoons surrounding his home, soaking up the natural beauty around him
and developing an early fascination and appreciation of nature.
In
the late 1950s and 1960s, he witnessed large tracts of swampland disappear as
rampant development spread throughout environmentally sensitive areas.
As
a reporter, columnist, and author, Hiaasen has used his columns and books to
air his objections to environmental degradation in his own trademark humorous,
satirical, and very powerful manner.
Hiaasen
joined the staff of the Miami
Herald in 1976, began writing
novels in the 1980s, and never shied away from taking on the tough issues with
topics frequently involving dirty development deals, corruption, and political
scandals. He says most of his characters and storylines are stolen from
headlines or contemporary situations. His books, like many of his columns,
often deal with environmental issues.
